Trellises make for a nice statement piece in the garden.  They can also be utilized in a variety of patio settings as well.  If you’re ever leaning toward building something more substantial, or remodeling your patio, then take a look at what a pergola might be able to do for your space.  Sometimes, the terms arbor or pergola are used interchangeably.  You can think of a pergola as a “3-D” trellis.  In other words, trellises are typically more flat structures that either sit against a wall or other fence and provide a support framework for growing plants and vines or vegetables in the garden.  An arbor is often a slightly smaller version of a pergola.  You’ll often see these used as entrance ways into the garden or patio areas.

More often than not, these structures are made of wood.  Commonly, cedar or redwood are the first choices.  The reason is simple – these woods stand up well to the elements.  They actually weather to a nice silvery-grey color.  If you have ever seen an old deck like this, then you can imagine how that look could really add depth and character to a garden or patio space.  But, if you prefer something more substantial or in less need of any maintenance, you could get something made of metal as well.  There are elegant looking iron looking trellises as well.  Whatever type you choose, it is sure to enhance your backyard space.
